Recently we were visiting Scottsdale, Arizona.
Wow. What a beautiful area. The tan and red land
stetches out in front as far as the eye can see. Out of
the sparse landscape grows cactus, shrub and century plants.
Just when you think you can see forever the sight is
broken by the surrounding mountains standing starkly
against the desert.
The Saguaro Cactus grows prolifically in this area.
The Saguaro Cactus grows straight for 50 years
before putting out its first nub.
By the time the cactus has 4 offshoots it is normally 100
years old.
Lake Theodore Roosevelt in nearby Roosevelt, Arizona
provides many opportunities for parking your RV. This is
an area in the mountains with reasonably mild weather and
plenty of campsites. Lake Roosevelt provides many recreational
opportunities including boating and fishing.
A visit to the Cliff Dwelling at Tonto National Mountument
is well worth the hike up to the cliffs. The indian cliff
dwellings provide amazing insight into the lives of the indians
which once inhabited the dwellings. These dwellings are well
preserved and you can wander through the dwellings on your own
and ask questions of the ranger at the site.
The guide at the Cliff Dwelling on the day we visited was an
RV'er who was receiving a campsite in exchange for the
volunteer work he and his wife were performing.
For the RV'er, you can find a beautiful location to
stay and explore. You may also be able to cover part or
all of your camp site fees by volunteering your time as a
guide, on research projects or performing administrative
tasks.
